David Montgomery to take leave of absence

Former GM Pat Gillick will assume his duties on an interim basis.

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

The Phillies president, David Montgomery is taking a medical leave of absence as he continues to deal with his recovery from surgery to remove cancer from his jaw in May. Montgomery has served as president since 1997, and began with the team in 1971, as a ticket salesman, and has been a part owner of the club since 1981.

Assuming Montgomery’s role will be Pat Gillick, who served as the team’s general manager from 2005-2008, retiring after their championship season. He had been an advisor to the president and general manager prior to filling in for Montgomery. Gillick will handle day-to-day operations for the Phillies, with the team’s vice presidents reporting to him, per the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Matt Gelb.

Here is the official statement from the Phillies:

”The Phillies announced today that David Montgomery is taking a medical leave of absence from the organization while he continues to recover from jaw cancer surgery which occurred on May 19, 2014. During the leave, Pat Gillick, the Club’s former General Manager and its current Senior Advisor to the President/General Manager, will assume David’s responsibilities.

Gillick stated the following: ‘I have the highest regard for David Montgomery, as does everyone in our industry. I am glad to be of assistance to the Phillies.’

The Club looks forward to David returning to his roles as General Partner, President and Chief Executive Officer when he is fully recovered.”

Here’s to speedy recovery for Mr. Montgomery.
