It’s that time of year again. Every Sunday, sports bars and restaurants with multiple televisions will be crammed wall-to-wall with rabid football fans, all clinging to various levels of hope and/or delusion.
Football Sunday tales of sadness
Every gathering of football fans will feature schadenfreude, false hope, or drunken woe. We gather to commiserate over these stories.

For Week 1 of the NFL, I asked all of you to share your tales of hilarity, sadness, or a guy in a Browns jersey passed out in the bathroom of a Beef O’Brady’s. If you have your own tales, please share them in the comments below. You can also tweet them to me at @sundownmotel all season long. I’ll be here, rounding up the very best.
WEEK 1 TALES OF SADNESS:
- It’s another season for the Jets:
@sundownmotel @JimmyJazz1968 i saw something sad: we're all watching the Jets play
— Virgil Texas (@virgiltexas) September 7, 2014 - Even in desolation, we watch football:
@FanSince09 @sundownmotel I'm in a bar alone in Denver rooting for the Dolphins. So I got that going
— Ricardo Marquez (@iBlogBetter) September 7, 2014 - In a Bears bar in San Diego (yes), a man showed up ... to read the newspaper.
@sundownmotel this guy is reading the paper. pic.twitter.com/51R38se0kA
— Christoph Gabaldo (@cwgabaldo) September 7, 2014 He did intermittently clap for the Bears, however. So he wasn’t JUST reading the newspaper.
- It’s another season for the Washington NFL team:
@sundownmotel bunch if DC fans just cheered and applauded because RG3 slid at the end of a run. "he slid! He did it!"
— Aaron M (@hurricanept) September 7, 2014 - I think we have all been where this Titans fan has been:
.@sundownmotel dude at sports bar eating nachos, alone, and using his tablet. i feel bad for his tab screen because this guy is a slob
— Journo Horse (@AmericanMatt5) September 7, 2014 Although unlike Solo Nachos Titans Fan, not everyone’s team won on Sunday.
- And yes, even in stadiums, there is woe:
