Kirk Cousins leads Washington to biggest comeback win in franchise history

Kirk Cousins had a brilliant outing in an otherwise unspectacular season.

Kirk Cousins has been otherwise mediocre this season. A healthy completion percentage masked a shaky ability to hit receivers more than 10 yards downfield, and six touchdown to eight interceptions entering Week 7 spoke for itself.

On Sunday, however, Cousins was brilliant. He tied a franchise record (joining Jason Campbell) with 33 completions on just 40 attempts -- an 82.5 completion percentage. He passed for three touchdowns and zero interceptions, AND added a rushing touchdown. He led Washington out of a 24-0 hole, scoring on every possession of the second half except the last, to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 31-30 win was the biggest comeback in franchise history. The game-winning score came on an 11-play, 80-yard drive. The best play of the series was a pinpoint 18-yard completion to Jamison Crowder down the right sideline that gave Washington a first down on the Bucs' 6-yard line. Three plays later, Cousins hit Jordan Reed for the game-winning score.

The Buccaneers almost completed a miracle of their own. Jameis Winston seemingly put team in field goal position on a drive that started with just 24 second left on the clock, but Charles Sims coughed up the ball, sparking a mad scramble that ended with Washington gaining possession of the ball.

Washington’s quarterback controversy will likely flare up again at some point, but there’s no question this weekend: Cousins is king.
