Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick both day to day for Jets

Geno Smith made his season debut against the Raiders.

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Geno Smith entered the game against the Oakland Raiders after Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a left thumb injury Sunday on a sack. Late in the game, Smith left briefly after taking a couple of hard hits in his first appearance since suffering a broken jaw when he was punched by former teammate IK Enemkpali during training camp.

Despite his own injury, Fitzpatrick came back into the game until Smith returned. Head coach Todd Bowles announced on Monday that both players were considered day to day. Fitzgerald, who was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his left thumb, will eventually need to undergo surgery:

Smith, on the other hand, does not have any structural damage. He’s dealing with a left shoulder bruise and a sore abdomen.

Third-string quarterback Bryce Petty is expected to take more snaps in practice this week. Bowles also confirmed that the team was looking into outside help at quarterback -- including former Jet Matt Flynn -- in case Smith or Fitzpatrick had to miss significant time.

Fitzpatrick has performed well as the Jets’ starter thus far this season, throwing 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions and 1,472 yards at 7.01 yards per attempt to help lead the Jets to a 4-2 start. He went 3 for 3 for 21 yards against the Raiders before leaving. He threw two more passes when he entered the game for Smith, completing one of them for 25 yards.

Smith was the Jets’ presumed starter during training camp before getting into an altercation with Enemkpali. Smith reportedly owed Enemkpali money from unused plane tickets and had not paid back his teammate.

Smith struggled in his first two seasons in the NFL. Last season he threw 13 touchdowns to 13 interceptions in 14 games. In the 34-20 loss to the Raiders, he completed 27 of 42 passes for 265 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He was also the Jets’ leading rusher with two carries for 34 yards.
