Cardinals OL Mike Iupati taken off field in an ambulance after helmet-to-helmet hit by Kam Chancellor

Mike Iupati was seemingly caught off-guard while trying to block Kam Chancellor.

Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Mike Iupati had to be taken off the field in an ambulance Sunday night after taking a blow to the head from Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor. Iupati appeared to be caught off-guard by the safety, lowering his head just before taking the hit.

The Caridnals announced that Iupati was taken to the hospital with a neck injury, and that he has feeling in his extremities. An MRI and CT scan also came back normal. He was released from the hospital Sunday night and is expected to fly back home with the team.

Iupati was down on the ground for several minutes. He was immobilized on a stretcher before being loaded into the ambulance.

The play recalled another scary collision that Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette took against the Dallas Cowboys. Lockette suffered a season-ending neck injury on the play. He received a warm welcome at CenturyLink Field when he helped raise the 12th Man flag before Sunday’s game.

Iupati went to Arizona this offseason after becoming an unrestricted free agent. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, for whom he was named three-time Pro Bowler. He has been one of the most important parts of a resurgent offense for the 6-2 Cardinals.
