Josh McCown out for the season with a broken collarbone

Josh McCown’s season is over, meaning that the Browns now have a difficult decision to make. Though Johnny Manziel was active, the Browns left him on the bench in the fourth quarter of Monday’s wild game against the Ravens.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown left the team's game against the Baltimore Ravens with an apparent shoulder injury Monday night. On Tuesday, head coach Mike Pettine confirmed that McCown will miss the rest of the season with a broken collarbone.

McCown was replaced by Austin Davis during the game despite the fact that Johnny Manziel was active. Pettine said after the game that McCown would play against Cincinnati on Sunday if healthy. He was non-committal about naming a new starter in place of McCown, however.

Manziel was on the bench for reportedly lying to Browns coaches about attending a party. Fans in the stadium chanted for Manziel to come in the game after McCown was hurt.

McCown had been in the midst of a good game, completing 21 of 38 pass attempts for 212 yards and a touchdown that was very reminiscent of something Manziel might do. Davis entered the game having not thrown a pass this season. He started eight games for the St. Louis Rams last season and threw for 2,001 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Manziel had won the Browns' starting job prior to being benched. The 2014 first-round pick had been playing well, passing for 372 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Steelers in his most recent outing.

Despite imploring fans, however, Browns head coach Mike Pettine was committed to sending Manziel a message -- for this week, at least, and perhaps beyond.

Davis acquitted himself well against the Ravens, going 7-for-10 passing for 77 yards and a game-tying touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin. He nearly led the Browns on a short game-winning field goal drive, but the Ravens blocked the kick and returned it for a touchdown in the most improbable finish of the season.

The Browns are also reportedly on the verge of signing Terrelle Pryor to provide additional depth, though Pettine said that two sides still haven’t come to an official deal.
