Sports Illustrated announced Sunday that readers had voted American Pharoah, who is a horse and not a person, as Sportsman of the Year.
American Pharoah, who is a horse, voted Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated readers
American Pharoah could not be reached for comment. And even if he could, he probably wouldn’t say much.
Much like in many of his races, American Pharoah blew away the competition, receiving a whopping 47 percent of the vote. No other contender received more than 29 percent of the vote.
Lionel Messi, who is a human, and also possibly the greatest soccer player of all time, received 243,000 fewer votes than American Pharoah, who is a horse. Steph Curry, who is also a human, and whose shooting ability has altered the very way we watch basketball and transformed the Warriors into perhaps the best NBA team of all time, received 253,000 fewer votes than American Pharoah, who is a horse. Serena Williams, who is a human and perhaps the most dominant tennis player ever, received just 5,500 votes, 273,000 fewer than American Pharoah, who is a horse.
SI will announce who wins the actual Sportsman of the Year award Monday. In its 60-plus years, the award has exclusively been won by humans.
