Melvin Gordon suffers knee injury vs. Dolphins, ruled out for the game

The injury is the latest setback in what has been a difficult season for the Chargers rookie.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Melvin Gordon will miss the rest of Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins after suffering a knee injury, the Chargers announced. He had 41 yards on 15 carries before leaving.

Gordon suffered the injury late in the first half. He was able to walk off the field and into the locker room under his own power despite having his left leg bent at an awkward angle. Donald Brown was the Chargers’ running back after the offense came on the field after halftime, however, and Gordon was ruled out after being originally being designated as questionable.

Gordon has had a difficult rookie season. He was taken No. 15 overall in the NFL Draft, but has averaged just 3.6 yards per carry for 600 yards. He has also yet to score a touchdown and has four lost fumbles. By contrast, Todd Gurley, who was selected No. 10 overall, has 1,023 yards at 4.9 yards per carry, nine touchdowns and just one lost fumble.

It doesn’t help that Gordon has had to deal with a litany of injuries to the offensive line in front of him and his supporting cast of skill players. A serious late-season injury would be an awful way to cap a trying season.
