Attempting to take a lead down 21-20 in the Holiday Bowl, Wisconsin’s Tanner McEvoy looked like he clearly stayed in bounds on a potentially go-ahead touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
Wisconsin go-ahead TD called back on questionable out of bounds call
Instead, the referee ruled him out of bounds, a non-reviewable play, turning the play into a 19-yard run that put Wisconsin at their own 46-yard line. McEvoy almost certainly would have scored without the errant whistle, on what was already a poor night for the officials.
Several plays later, while converting a third-and-7 to USC's 42-yard line, Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave received a cleat to the face and had to leave the game briefly. Stave would return for Wisconsin's following drive, but not before the golden chance to take the lead was ruined. His backup failed to complete either of his passing attempts and the drive ended in a punt.
