The Denver Broncos are down two of their best offensive weapons against the San Diego Chargers. According to ESPN’s John Clayton, running back C.J. Anderson and tight end Vernon Davis will miss the rest of Sunday’s game with an ankle injury and a concussion, respectively.
Broncos lose C.J. Anderson and Vernon Davis to injuries against the Chargers
C.J. Anderson and Vernon Davis had both been having good days before going down.
Both players had been in the midst of productive days. Anderson had 54 total yards of offense, including 42 yards rushing on seven carries, before leaving. Davis was targeted three times for two receptions and 25 yards.
The Broncos have a capable backup to Anderson in the slippery Ronnie Hillman. Replacing Davis as a pass catcher may be more difficult, especially from the tight end position. The Broncos acquired Davis in a trade with the 49ers in early November, and he has since caught 12 passes for 123 yards. He gave the Broncos a dynamic weapon at the position after they lost Julius Thomas in the offseason.
The Broncos will need Owen Daniels and Virgil Green to step up in Davis’ absence. Fortunately for them, their defense is lending tremendous support to the offense. The Broncos led the Chargers 17-3 in the third quarter.
