NFL kickers missed more extra points Sunday than all of last year combined

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Well, the NFL’s new extra point rule has certainly made things a little more interesting this year, and that’s never been more clear than this week.

After teams missed a collective eight extra point attempts in the entirety of the 2014 season, there have been nine missed this Sunday alone.

The rules change was voted in by the NFL’s competition committee over the summer because the league’s extra point play had become a nearly-automatic afterthought to every touchdown. The ball was moved back 13 yards to the 15-yard line, with two-point conversions remaining at the 2-yard line. The new rule, interestingly, also gave the defense the ability to score two points on returns (plays that had previously been blown dead).

Stephone Anthony became the first player in league history to score two points on a blocked extra point when he scooped up the block by Kevin Williams in New Orleans today. A few other kickers managed to miss as well, highlighted by three straight combined misses by Sebastian Janikowski and Cairo Santos in the Raiders-Chiefs slugfest.

In other action:

Nick Novak missed an extra point for the Texans.
Dan Carpenter missed an extra point for the Bills.
Jason Myers missed two extra points for the Jags.
Phil Dawson had an extra point blocked for the 49ers.

Not a great day for kickers, and it’s not even over.
