Michigan athletic director Jim Hackett discussed the process behind hiring Jim Harbaugh as football coach today on the radio. He discussed a lot of interesting things about how it all came about, but there’s one we latched onto: the name for the coaching search, “Project Unicorn.”
Michigan’s coaching search for Jim Harbaugh was called ‘Project Unicorn’
Frolic through the open meadows, Jim Harbaugh, you magical beast. Splash us with your rainbows.
“While there’s some fun with that name, the unicorn is about perfection, trying to find something that’s perfect,” Hackett said in a extended interview on the Huge Show syndicated on radio across Michigan. “But really the more important reason was to have a non-sensical name. Because we would be in the hallways, the small group that was working on this, we could say we were talking about unicorn.”
1. Wait, coaching searches have code names? This ain’t the military.
2. We get what the implication was -- that Harbaugh, the ex-Michigan QB who went on to become a highly successful with a huge contract and successful NFL team, was a perfect, one-of-a-kind, unfindable entity. That’s neat and all, but most importantly, here is a photoshop of Jim Harbaugh’s head on a unicorn:
Okay, we’re done.
