Boston Marathon 2015: Route information, course map, road closures and more

The marathon will follow the same historic path, finishing in Copley Square.

Tens of thousands of runners will descend on Boston on Monday for the 119th running of the Boston Marathon. More than 30,000 runners are expected to participate and they will follow a familiar path. The course will once start on Main street in Hopkinton and wind 26.2 miles into Boston.

The race will start along Route 135, before continuing onto Route 16 and then merging onto Commonwealth. Runners will continue along Commonwealth before eventually heading onto Chestnut Hill Avenue. The course winds through Boston, hitting Beacon Street to Kenmore Square and then transitioning to Commonwealth Avenue. Finally, runners will head on Hereford Street before finishing on Boylston Street, with the race wrapping up in Copley Square. Here is a complete look at the course map. Via BAA.org:

With runners pouring into the streets, several roads will be closed throughout the day to accommodate the race. Several will be closed for much of the day with others re-opening to traffic in the late afternoon. Here is a look at the scheduled road closures to handle the race and spectator crowds.

With so many people congregating in a small area -- especially with the possibility of more than 50,000 spectators taking in the race -- traffic will likely be congested even when roads to re-open. Spectators and others commuting around Boston are encouraged to use MBTA or other public transportation. MBTA will enhance service before and after the race to accommodate the Marathon Monday crowds.

For those who prefer to avoid the crowds and instead watch at home, there are several options to follow the race live on television or online. WBZ-TV will have television and online coverage in Boston, while Universal Sports will provide national television coverage in addition to an online stream. BAA.org will also provide a live stream of the race.
