More than 37,000 participants converged on a chilly Sunday morning for the 35th annual London Marathon. Eliud Kipchoge took first place on the men’s side with a time of 2:04:42, beating out reigning champion Wilson Kipsang by just five seconds. Tigist Tufa of Ethopia, who ran the 26.2 miles in 2:23:22, was the women’s champion. Both Kipchoge and Tufa are first-time winners of the London Marathon.
London Marathon 2015 results: Eliud Kipchoge, Tigist Tufa win 35th annual race
Kipchoge was one of four Kenyans to finish in the top five on the men’s side, while Tuga won her first major race ever.

The 30-year-old Kipchoge was able to break away from fellow Kenyan Kipsang in the last 80 meters. It was nearly a top-five sweep for Kenya in the men’s race, with Dennis Kimetto and Stanley Biwott finishing in third and fourth. Tilahun Regassa of Ethopia held off Kenya’s Samuel Kitwara for fifth place to prevent the sweep.
Tufa, 28, captured her first win in a premier marathon. She finished 18 seconds ahead of Mary Keitany, who won the race in 2011 and 2012. Last year’s champion, Edna Kiplagat, came in 11th place. England’s Paula Radcliffe, who set the course record on the women’s side in 2003, participated in her final London Marathon. The 41-year-old ran an unofficial time of 2:36.55.
Two Americans emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s wheelchair races. Less than a week after winning the women’s wheelchair race at the Boston Marathon, Tatyana McFadden took home her third straight title in the London Marathon with a time of 1:41:14. On the men’s side, it was a race to the finish. Joshua George came out one second ahead of six-time winner David Weir for his first ever win in the race.
