Heading into Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, jockey Victor Espinoza looks to capture his second straight run for the roses at Churchill Downs. This year, Espinoza sits atop American Pharoah, the early favorite to capture the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky Derby 2015: Post positions and morning line odds
American Pharoah saw its odds to win drop as low as 2/1, per Odds Shark, but by Wednesday evening sat at 9/4 odds to win on Saturday. The horse will start in the 18th position.
“I really don’t know how good he is,” Espinoza told Tim Sullivan of the Louisville Courier-Journal. “I ride him, but the way he does things so easy, I really don’t know how good he is. He’s an amazing horse. But so far, I never ride him really hard.”
Espinoza won the Kentucky Derby in 2014 atop California Chrome, winner of the first two legs of the Triple Crown. His first Kentucky Derby win came in 2002 with War Emblem, when he teamed with trainer Bob Baffert. The two are together again in 2015, with Baffert training American Pharoah.
Expected to challenge American Pharoah are Dortmund, at 9/2 odds, and Carpe Diem, at 7/1.
