The final race of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes will be held in three weeks, June 6 at Belmont Park in New York. And we’ll have another chance at seeing a Triple Crown winner after American Pharoah won the first two jewels of the crown.
Belmont Stakes 2015: Date, time, location and more
The third race of the Triple Crown will be held June 6 in New York.
Bob Baffert’s horse won the Kentucky Derby in early may at Churchill Downs, then ran through rain on a sloppy Pimlico track two weeks later in Baltimore. This will be the second year in a row Victor Espinoza has a chance to win the Triple Crown after riding California Chrome last year as well. However, Chrome finished fourth that race.
The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed, who did so in 1978 after being Alydar.
The Belmont traditionally has a stronger field than the Preakness Stakes, as many owners and trainers tend to have their horse skip the annual race at Pimlico and rest instead. This year, however, the Preakness still saw a healthy field, with Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah joined by the second- and third-place Derby finishers, Firing Line and Dortmund. However, after an 18-horse field in Kentucky only eight horses ran in Baltimore.
