Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry has been fined $5,000 by the NBA for flopping during Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Houston Rockets, the league announced. It is the first time league MVP Curry has been fined for flopping, based on new rules put into effect last season.
Curry appears to have drawn the fine while attempting a contested three-pointer during which he threw out his legs in an attempt to earn a foul call.
The maneuver used to be common among some shooters in the NBA before the league changed its rules to prevent players from drawing fouls like that. While the referees didn’t notice it during the game, the league office reviews each play afterwards to enforce rules like this one.
Curry is the latest player to be fined for flopping in the postseason after Glen Davis and Corey Brewer received the same punishments a couple weeks ago for flopping during the series between the Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers.
The Clippers’ flopping got bad enough that coach Doc Rivers reportedly told the team to cut it out during halftime of a recent game.
