Dee Gordon thought the Miami Marlins' hiring of Dan Jennings as their manager was initially a joke, the second baseman told ESPN in a recent interview.
Dee Gordon initially thought Marlins’ Dan Jennings hire was a joke
It wasn’t, Dee. It wasn’t.

“When I got word of it, I was surprised,” Gordon said. “[Giancarlo] Stanton actually called me and told me, and I thought he was playing. But he was serious.”
The Marlins were 16-22 on May 18, when Jennings -- the team's former general manager -- replaced Mike Redmond in the dugout. Since then, Miami have lost eight of 10 games and are coming off of a road sweep at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Gordon certainly isn't to blame. The speedy 27-year-old owns a .376/.406/.448 line and leads the National League in hits (76) and stolen bases (19). Gordon has been worth 2.7 WAR, ranking third in the NL behind Bryce Harper and Paul Goldschmidt.
The Marlins, who own the NL’s second-worst record at 18-30, rank in the bottom third of the league in most offensive categories. That’s in spite of the performances of Gordon and Stanton, who has 13 home runs and is slugging north of .500.
