It’s been 37 years since Affirmed won the Triple Crown. Since then, 13 horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, only to fall short in the Belmont Stakes. In 2014, California Chrome, with jockey Victor Espinoza, won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes before becoming the aforementioned 13th horse to fall short.
Triple Crown odds 2015: Can American Pharoah end the drought?
It’s been a long time since the last Triple Crown win. Can American Pharoah make history?
American Pharoah continued the tradition of the past two years of winning as a favorite in the Kentucky Derby. He narrowly edged out Firing Line in the final seconds, and there was a familiar face in Espinoza guiding the horse to victory. Trainer Bob Baffert also enjoyed his fourth triumph at the Run for the Roses with the victory. Now, American Pharoah is favored to do it all again in the Preakness Stakes, but what about the Triple Crown?
American Pharoah is the -140 favorite to win the Preakness, with the rest of the field at +100, according to OddsShark. As far as the Triple Crown bid is concerned, American Pharoah is at +280, with a loss in the Triple Crown bid at -400. Those are tough odds, to be sure. They also have American Pharoah at +165 to win the Preakness but not the Belmont Stakes, with “any other result” being -215.
