New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez hit career home run No. 661 on Thursday evening. The homer moved Rodriguez ahead of Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time list.
Alex Rodriguez hits HR No. 661, moves into 4th place on career list
Rodriguez passed Willie Mays on the all-time home run list with a solo shot off Chris Tillman in the third inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Rodriguez connected on a 1-1 changeup from Baltimore Orioles starter Chris Tillman and drove it over the center field wall, giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Rodriguez nearly hit the milestone homer in the first inning but was robbed by Delmon Young, who made a leaping catch in front of the stands in right field.
After his seventh home run of the season, Rodriguez sits 53 homers behind Yankees legend Babe Ruth, who finished his career with 714. Rodriguez is on pace to go deep 39 times this year. Though that’s a stretch, it would almost certainly allow him to pass Ruth and perhaps threaten Hank Aaron, who is second on the all-time list with 755 homers.
Rodriguez, 39, is signed through 2017.
