American Pharoah won the Kentucky Derby by a length and the Preakness Stakes by seven. But we’ve seen this before, and trainer Bob Baffert’s charge will be the 14th horse to enter the Belmont Stakes with a chance to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed last performed the feat in 1978. In fact, AP is the third contender in four years with a chance to become just the 12th horse to win all three of thoroughbred racing’s marquee events.

Post Positions Draw Update
American Pharoah and seven other contenders will receive their post positions when the draw is held at 11:15 a.m. (ET) Wednesday morning at Rockefeller Center in New York. You can view the draw and interviews after it on NYRA.com. The 157th Belmont Stakes -- a 1-1/2-mile race -- is set for a 6:50 p.m. post time on Saturday.
The field is the lightest it has been since 2007, with many of the top competitors of the Derby and Preakness not even entering. Baffert’s other top horse, Dortmund, who was undefeated up until he ran against American Pharoah, will not be making the trip to New York, for instance. Nor will Firing Line, who finished second at Churchill Downs, nor will Divining Rod.
However, Tale of Verve, who unexpectedly finished second at the Preakness, is set for the Belmont Stakes, as is Materiality and Frosted, a pair of colts that skipped the second leg of the Triple Crown and could prove to be spoilers. The Triple Crown, as always, is no given.
