The Toronto Raptors just added a top forward in DeMarre Carroll, but they didn't stop them from meeting with free agent Wes Matthews on Wednesday. The team reportedly pitched Matthews on the idea of playing small forward with Carroll at the four and DeMar DeRozan at the two, according to Sam Amick of USA Today.

Fitting in Matthews’ salary wouldn’t be easy, but Toronto is reportedly considering it as part of a plan to go small.
Matthews, one of the top swingmen let on the market, has already met with the Raptors and Dallas Mavericks after the expiration of his previous deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. It's unclear how Toronto would be able to afford the talented shooter after signing Carroll to a four-year, $60 million deal earlier Wednesday, but it appears the team is making a run at it.
Assuming that Carroll will open with a $14 million salary in 2015-16, the Raptors won't have the money to offer Matthews a substantial contract without making some other hard decisions. The team may have already renounced its rights to free agent Amir Johnson, opening up some available cap space there, but there's still a cap hold on free-agent guard Lou Williams and even removing that wouldn't be enough. Toronto would likely need to make a trade to shed salary to add Matthews even if Johnson and Williams walk.
Matthews, 28, saw his 2014-15 season end prematurely due to an Achilles injury, but is reportedly ahead of schedule in his rehab. One of the best shooters in the game when healthy, he averaged 15.9 points on 45-percent shooting in 60 games last season. He’s never shot below 38 percent from three in a season, and in a league where long-range shooting is at a premium, Matthews is a valuable piece.
The challenge for Toronto will be figuring out how to fit Matthews so they can roll with a smaller lineup. The team could start Matthews, DeRozan, Carroll, Kyle Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas to open next season, which would be an intriguing group to watch.
