The San Antonio Spurs will sign former BYU star Jimmer Fredette, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein. Fredette’s salary will be for training camp with a “modest” guarantee, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.

San Antonio will give Fredette the chance to make the team in October.
There’s no guarantee that Fredette makes the team, but San Antonio wants to get him into training camp and see if he makes an impression. The Spurs have 14 players under contract, so there is an open roster spot for Fredette should he impress.
Fredette has struggled to make an NBA impact about winning the 2011 AP Player of the Year at BYU. The Sacramento Kings acquired him with the No. 10 pick in the NBA Draft, but he fell behind Isaiah Thomas in the point guard rotation. The Kings waived him during the 2013-14 season and the Bulls scooped him up, but he barely played in Chicago. He signed with the Pelicans last summer and occasionally made an impact off the bench, but quickly found himself out of the rotation after the trade-deadline acquisition of Norris Cole.
Fredette has deep shooting range, but hasn’t been able to beat NBA athletes off the dribble or defend adequately. The Spurs are hoping their motion system can highlight his shooting while masking his flaws elsewhere.
