An introduction to the 2015 Special Olympics World Games

Special Olympics World Games begins on Saturday, July 25. Here is all you need to know to cheer for these global athletes.

What is it?

Every two years, Special Olympics delegations from all over the world gather for the World Games, alternating between Summer and Winter Games. This year, 7,000 athletes from 177 countries will gather in Los Angeles to compete in 25 different sports. It will be the largest sports and humanitarian event in 2015.

Who can compete?

Special Olympics is a global sports organization for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Athletes are chosen to compete by their country’s delegation based on a variety of factors. Head here and enter your zip code to find a hometown athlete to cheer for.

What events are included?

Events include Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Equestrian, Football (Soccer), Golf, Gymnastics, Half Marathon, Handball, Judo, Kayaking, Open Water Swimming, Powerlifting, Roller Skating, Sailing, Softball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon and Volleyball.
