Boston Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino will leave his position by the end of 2015, as first reported by Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe. The exact time frame on the move is unknown at this time, though Lucchino is expected to leave his position by the end of October, at the latest.

Lucchino will be replaced by Sam Kennedy, who is currently the chief operating officer of the team, according to Steve Buckley and Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald. Kennedy will not have input on baseball operations, which Lucchino did throughout his tenure.
Lucchino, who turns 70 in September, has been with the Red Sox since 2002, when he was one-third of a new ownership group that included John Henry and Tom Werner. Lucchino has helped lead the organization to three World Series championships in his 13-year tenure, and has also worked for the Padres and Orioles at other points in his career.
The transition of power from Lucchino to Kennedy, who is 42 years old and has worked alongside Lucchino since their days together in San Diego, represents a changing face of power within the Red Sox’ organization. Lucchino’s role in baseball operations over the last few seasons is thought to have had a major impact on some of the team’s decisions, most notably the hiring of Bobby Valentine as manager before the 2012 season.
