Arian Foster could miss start of regular season after suffering groin injury in Texans camp

Foster reportedly pulled up limping on a pass play, and may need surgery.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Arian Foster could miss the start of the 2015 NFL season to undergo surgery for a "significant" groin injury he suffered during Houston Texans training camp Monday, according to ESPN's Tania Ganguli. Head coach Bill O'Brien offered few details on the extent of the injury.

“We’ve got to monitor Arian,” O’Brien said after practice. “Like I told you guys that in the offseason and I think that’s what that’s all about today.”

Foster reportedly pulled up with a limp during a pass play, and had to watch the rest of Monday’s practice from the sideline. He has struggled to stay healthy the last two seasons, missing 11 games. Despite his struggles, however, Foster has remained productive. Last season, he rushed for 1,246 yards at 4.8 yards per carry in 13 games.

Should Foster be forced to sit, the Texans will likely turn to Alfred Blue and Jonathan Grimes to shoulder the rushing load. Blue earned a backup role behind Foster as a 2014 rookie, but managed just 3.1 yards per carry. Grimes has a 3.7 career YPC through three seasons.

The Texans could turn to free agency to add depth, in which case they'd have their pick among Ahmad Bradshaw, Chris Johnson, Ray Rice, Pierre Thomas, Shonn Greene, Ben Tate and Knowshon Moreno along with others.
