Attorney of Patrick Kane accuser withdraws from rape case

The investigation into the alleged rape by Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane took an odd turn on Thursday night, when the attorney for the accuser withdrew from the case, citing an ethical obligation.

Buffalo attorney Thomas Eoannou held a press conference on Thursday to announce his decision, based on the evidence in the case.

“I do not have confidence in the way this was represented to me,” Eoannou said. “I do not believe the version of events as to how I received the bag, and I feel it is best I withdraw.

“This is very simple. ... I have an ethical obligation to withdraw.”

Eoannou made it clear that his withdrawal should not call the accuser into question, nor lessen the validity of her claims.

This comes one day after Eoannou said the evidence was tampered with, with the bag ripped open and delivered to the accuser’s mother -- a charge denied by the Erie County (N.Y.) police department.

“All evidence related to the case ... is accounted for and remains in its original packaging in the possession of the Erie County Central Police Services,” police commissioner John Glascott said on Wednesday.

Erie County district attorney Frank Sedita will hold a press conference on Friday morning at 11 a.m. ET.
