Adrian Peterson suffers lower back injury, questionable to return vs. Packers

The Vikings may be without their star running back for the remainder of their title bout against the Packers.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Adrian Peterson left Sunday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers in the third quarter with a lower back injury and is questionable to return. Peterson had been having a big night for the Minnesota Vikings, gaining 60 yards on 17 carries.

Despite the injury, Peterson will finish the regular season as the NFL rushing leader, currently sitting at 1,478 yards. Doug Martin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was second with 1,402 yards.

Fortunately for the Vikings, they have a capable backup. With Peterson out for most of the 2014 season, rookie Jerick McKinnon rushed for 538 yards at 4.8 yards per carry as a rookie. He continued his big-play ways in his second season, averaging 5.3 yards per carry for 256 yards entering Week 17. He has three catches for 33 yards against the Packers.

The Vikings have also been using wide receiver Adam Thielen in the ground game against the Packers, giving him two carries for 67 yards.
