High School basketball coach knocks down referee while arguing a call

A men’s high school basketball coach in Pennsylvania was involved in an incident with a referee on Tuesday night when he bumped into and possibly headbutted an official while arguing a foul call.

Game footage via the livestream from WBCB 1490 AM shows Jerry Devine, coach at Neshaminy High School, knock down an official while disputing the call.

From that vantage point you can see the coach, who the announcers identify as Devine, come out onto the court angry at the foul. One of his players had just been called for a charge. After being whistled for a technical foul by one official, Devine appears to make contact with another, causing him to fall to the court.

Another angle of the confrontation, from City of Basketball Love, makes the contact appear much worse and closer to a headbuttt.

Without good quality video, it is difficult to determine whether Devine made contact with his head or if it was body contact. The official got up quickly and joined the other officials at the scorers table. Devine was “removed” from the gym after the incident, according to Josh Verlin of City of Basketball Love.

According to his bio page, Devine has been a teacher for 18 years and is in his 10th season as the men's basketball head coach. Per Philly.com, he has been placed on leave as both a coach and teacher and may face disciplinary action for the incident.
