On Wednesday night, PWInsider broke the news (subscription required) that John Cena suffered an injury that will require shoulder surgery. A short while later, Cena himself tweeted out confirmation that he will be undergoing surgery on Thursday.

If further confirmation was required, WWE.com also posted the story as breaking news. If this ends up being rotator cuff surgery, as is being speculated, average recovery time is six months or longer. Even the most promising results would keep Cena out of action until well past WrestleMania 32 in April.

WWE has suffered a plague of injuries in the past several months, with the unfortunate end result that many of their biggest stars will be out of action through WrestleMania. Cena joins Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Cesaro and Tyson Kidd on the disabled list, with all five men suffering injuries that required surgery.

The most recent rumors for WWE’s WrestleMania plans indicated the company hoped to build to a dream match of Cena vs. The Undertaker. If those were indeed the plans, they would seem to be off the table for this year.

This will be the first Road to WrestleMania completely devoid of John Cena since 2004, ending his streak of 12 consecutive WrestleMania appearances.

Cageside Seats will provide updates on this story as it develops.
