Cowboys insist Tony Romo will be the starter again soon no matter how well Dak Prescott is playing

Rookie Dak Prescott continues to impress, but it still won’t be enough to keep him ahead of Tony Romo on the Dallas Cowboys depth chart. Team owner Jerry Jones reiterated Sunday that Romo will be the starter upon his return, regardless of Prescott’s performance.

“Tony is our No. 1 quarterback. We’re going to have the luxury of being able to, I think, see them both,” Jones said, per NFL.com’s Kevin Patra. “I don’t want to presume that Dak is going to be necessarily healthy, I don’t want to presume anything like that. But I welcome the opportunity of having Dak playing at this level and Tony back in excellent health. It’s going to be really special for the Cowboys.”

Romo will have an MRI on Monday to determine how far along he is in his recovery, but the Cowboys expect he will be ready to return to the starting lineup in Week 8 after the team’s Week 7 bye.

The problem of having two healthy quarterbacks that are capable of starting is a welcome one for the Cowboys after the team struggled to find anyone capable of not screwing it all up last year.

Romo played in just four games for Dallas in 2015, and the team turned to Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel, and Kellen Moore to lead the way instead. While the Cowboys were 3-1 with Romo under center, the team was 1-11 with the three backups filling his place.

That hasn’t been the case with Prescott who has led the Cowboys to a 4-1 record and is closing in on Tom Brady’s record for mistake-free football to begin a career:

Prescott completed 18 of 24 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown in a 28-14 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 5, his fourth consecutive game with a passer rating over 100.

While the fourth-round pick appears to be the quarterback of the future for the Cowboys, taking over the team with Romo healthy isn’t as easy as Brady snatching a job away from Drew Bledsoe. Romo’s contract is enormous and even if Prescott is the starter, the Cowboys have little choice but to keep Romo around until 2018.

Romo has been injury prone in recent years, but his play on the field has still been strong when healthy. He had a career-best 113.2 passer rating in 2014 with 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions before his struggles with shoulder problems in 2015.
