Colin Kaepernick is making his first start since Nov. 1, 2015, after spending the last few months in headlines for protesting the national anthem and speaking out against racial injustice and police brutality. He hadn’t thrown a touchdown pass in 364 days. You might expect him to be a little rusty after so much time on the bench. He reminded us all that — oh, yeah — he’s a football player with a 53-yard touchdown strike to Torrey Smith against the Buffalo Bills.

KAP IS BACK.

Smith got wide open behind a good Bills secondary. Purposeful or not, Kaepernick did a nice job under-throwing the ball and forcing the defensive back to over-pursue the play. He looks poised as passer, and even has a couple strong runs so far in Buffalo.
After inviting so much scrutiny recently, it’s impressive to see Kaepernick come right out against a good defense and make the San Francisco 49ers’ offense look much more explosive than it did with Blaine Gabbert behind center.
And no, just so we’re clear, how Kaepernick performs shouldn’t change the impact of his protest.
