Odell Beckham Jr. had fun and the Giants are being party poopers about it

For all the bad moments that Odell Beckham Jr. has had the past five weeks, it was all forgotten Sunday afternoon after he went off on the Baltimore Ravens.

Beckham had a monster game, and we saw the joyous face of one of the league’s biggest superstars once again. With eight receptions for 222 yards and two touchdowns, he finally had one of those big games we all know he’s capable of having. Most notably, he was happy again.

This is also great when you consider the fact that the team was prepared to bench him if he didn’t stop with his outbursts.

One of the big attractions from Beckham’s performance was his continued relationship with the kicking net. After he scored a huge touchdown to put the Giants up 27-23 to win the game, he took his helmet off, which Giants head coach Ben McAdoo didn’t appreciate — especially after Beckham received a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“He came up to me right after,” McAdoo said. “We had a discussion about it. Can’t have it. He knows that. He went out and wanted to fire up the kickoff coverage and the defense. He knows we can’t have it.”

After he took his helmet off, he ran toward the net, proposed to the net, and hugged it. It was really unlike anything we have ever seen in a football game.

After the game, Beckham offered an appropriately silly response to his net proposal.

”Our relationship’s growing. I thought we might as well make it serious. I proposed, she said yes, so me and the net are gonna get married, sometime soon.”

He added, “Hopefully it all works out. I’m 23, I don’t know much about marriage but she seems like a pretty good gal.”

When asked if he was OK with the antics with the net, McAdoo said, “We need to keep our focus on the ballgame.”

Eli Manning, like McAdoo, didn’t necessarily like his actions either.

“He made plays, so it’s one of those deals where, hey you can get real sick of it if he’s not going out there and making plays,” Manning said on Mike Francesa’s WFAN radio show.

“But when he goes out there and has a couple huge catches and 200 yards and a game-winning touchdown -- you still want him to be smarter, but you accept it a little easier.”

Beckham’s game, while great for him and his morale, wasn’t necessarily received positively by his entire team. Whether that becomes anything more has yet to be seen.

But for the time being, things seem fine, and Beckham is happy. That’s been the Giants’ concern since the beginning. But if they start losing, it’s possible his hijinks could wear thin on the team.

As long as Beckham isn’t getting flagged for his interactions with the net, or anything else he might be doing, it doesn’t seem harmful. Football, and sports in general, should be fun.
