The Carolina Panthers are in a bad place. Through four games, they have more losses than they did in 19 games last season. Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons was the sort of demoralization that sends a good team into an existential crisis. And Julio Jones was the biggest reason.

With that 75-yard touchdown catch above, Jones recorded 12 receptions for 300 yards, becoming the sixth player in NFL history to record 300 yards receiving in one game. The last player to do it was Calvin Johnson, who had 329 yards against the Dallas Cowboys in 2013. He fell just 36 yards short of the all-time record — 336 yards by the Los Angeles Rams’ Flipper Anderson against the New Orleans Saints in 1989.
Think about this: Matt Ryan threw for a franchise-record 503 yards and Jones had well more than half of them. (He also set a franchise record, but you might have guessed that.) Jones’ outing comes just one week after he was held to one reception for 16 yards on seven targets against the Saints.
There was absolutely nothing the Panthers could do about it (Josh Norman might have helped, huh?). But if it makes them feel any better, Jones has dunked on teams before. In 2014, he dropped 259 yards on the Green Bay Packers, making him the only player in NFL history with two 250-plus-yard games in his career.
