Texans OL Derek Newton suffers rare injury, tearing a tendon in both knees on one play

Newton’s injury is something we hardly see.

On Monday night’s game between the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos, an unusual and severe injury happened to Texans offensive tackle Derek Newton.

Newton was in pass protection against Broncos linebacker Von Miller when he went down with injuries to both of his knees. He was taken off the field with air-casts on each leg, and according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Newton tore both of his patellar tendons.

This injury is very rare. According to City Pages, a 2003 academic paper called Spontaneous Bilateral Patellar Tendon Rupture In An Otherwise Healthy Patient noted that there had been fewer than 15 cases of it described.

In 1993, Chicago Bears receiver Wendell Davis suffered the injury at the old Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. He missed the rest of the 1993 season, as well as the entire 1994 season. After trying to come back with the Colts in 1995, he retired after never playing a game.

In 2006, Gary Baxter suffered the injury in a game against the Denver Broncos as a member of the Cleveland Browns. He was the first player to return to the field of play after having such an injury, but his career was over after the 2007 season.

Greg Childs suffered the injury with the Minnesota Vikings back in 2012, after suffering the injury on the second-to-last play of a practice in preseason. Childs was put on IR, and then was placed on the physically unable to perform list in 2013, before being released in March of 2014. He attempted a career in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts in 2014, but was released shortly after being signed.

It is a most unfortunate injury for Newton, and hopefully he’s able to make a comeback we’ve never seen before.
