Cavaliers-Knicks game time moved to 7:30 p.m. ET because of the World Series

The Cavaliers moved their season opener’s start time up 30 minutes so fans could also watch the Indians in Game 1 of the World Series.

When the NBA released its 2016-17 schedule back in August, the plan was to have the Cavaliers host the Knicks in the season opener at 8 p.m. ET and receive their championship rings half an hour earlier.

But then something unforeseen happened: the Cleveland Indians made the World Series. Thanks to a magical playoff run combined with an AL victory in the 2016 All-Star Game, the Indians will host the Cubs at 8:08 p.m. in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night. That’s eight minutes after the Cavaliers’ season opener was supposed to start.

And because that poses a conflict to many Cleveland fans who want to bask in the glory of two potential championship teams at once, the NBA has responded. The Cavaliers’ season opener will now begin at 7:30 p.m. ET, with the ring ceremony at 7 p.m. ET.

This way, Clevelanders can see their basketball team collect its championship spoils and still have time to cheer on its baseball team as it tries to do the same. In fact, they’ll be able to do both at the same time.

For the rest of us, this means plotting out the night differently. The second game of TNT’s doubleheader (Spurs at Warriors) will still begin at 10:30 p.m. ET, so there may be a gap between games. Here’s a free recommendation: go check out Jazz-Blazers at 10 p.m. ET on the free League Pass preview while you wait. That’ll be one of the best League Pass games all season.
