If you’ve ever seen Tom Brady lumbering for a first down on a quarterback keeper, the first thought that entered your mind was probably not, “Wow, he looks like the fastest player in the NFL.” Unless, of course, you’re Brady’s mom.

That’s a sweet thing for Brady’s mom to say, but she’s wrong.

Tom Curran of CSNNE.com asked Brady about running for a first down against the Pittsburgh Steelers and mentioned Brady’s lack of speed.
“Don’t tell my mom that, either, because she would totally disagree with that,” Brady said. “She thinks I’m very fast.”
Reporters chuckled, because this is what Tom Brady looks like when he’s scrambling for a first down.
“I know,” Brady said.
Perhaps Brady’s mom missed his NFL Combine performance, where his 5.28 40-yard dash time may have had something to do with him slipping into the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft.
Even Brady’s dad is willing to admit the truth — that Brady is slow.
“He was a pretty slow white guy,” Tom Brady Sr. said in a 2015 interview with NFL Network’s Andrea Kremer.
Hopefully this doesn’t cause conflict within the Brady family, because Brady’s mom does not share his father’s perspective. Not only does Brady’s mom think he’s very fast, but she thinks he’s faster than everybody else.
“She said, ‘I think you’re the fastest person on the field,’” Brady said. “I said, ‘Mom, you are crazy. There’s no way.’”
Brady is slow, but he’s pretty effective when rushing for first downs. Last season, Brady had 34 carries, and converted 14 of them into first downs for a respectable 41.2 percent conversion rate, which puts him in the top 10 in the league. He’s in the top 10 again this season. Brady has nine carries for 29 yards, and four of those carries resulted in first downs. It doesn’t matter how fast he runs if he’s getting the job done.
