Another week, another win for Cowboys super rookies Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott

There was a lot of concern in Dallas when Tony Romo went down with a broken bone in his back before the season began. Those worries might be long gone now, thanks to the Cowboys’ dynamic rookie duo of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott.

The two dominated the Cowboys’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon in a 28-14 win. Elliott got things started with a 13-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, setting the pace for the rest of the game.

Prescott owned the second quarter. He capped off an 11-play drive that went 89 yards with a 5-yard touchdown rush. Later in the quarter, he would hit Cole Beasley for a 14-yard touchdown. The Cowboys had a 21-0 lead going into the locker room.

The Bengals didn’t have turnovers, but they were outplayed in every aspect of the game. It was simply an ugly afternoon.

A big third-quarter run by Elliott essentially sealed the game for the Cowboys. Elliott found a hole, hit it, zoomed past two Bengals and was off to the races. There was no chance of anybody in orange and black catching him.

The Bengals had a pair of late touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. The damage had been done by Dak and Zeke.

This is hardly the first time these two have carried the team. In the first four weeks of the season, Prescott and Elliott have led the team in both passing and rushing. The competition hasn’t been that crazy, with games against the Giants, Washington, Bears, and 49ers. Regardless, what they’ve done is quite impressive.

Prescott has been nearly flawless. Of course you expect a bad pass or two from your rookie quarterback, but Prescott set a rookie record for most pass attempts without an interception to start his career. He can break Tom Brady’s record which has been held since since 2001, next week. That’s pretty good company if he’s able to break it in Week 6 against Green Bay. The most impressive part of the feat might be that Prescott has done almost all of it without Dez Bryant.

Nobody had greater expectations heading into the season than Elliott. He was picked fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft after an illustrious career at Ohio State. The Cowboys weren’t exactly pressed for running back help, so drafting Elliott in that spot raised some eyebrows.

Many felt he could lead the league in rushing, which was an almost totally unrealistic expectation to put on a rookie. But Elliott is meeting those, with 546 rushing yards, good for first in the NFL. That’s been a contributing factor to the combined success of the rookies. Neither has too much to do, and it takes a lot of pressure off of each other.

The question now has to be asked: Can the Cowboys go back to Romo when he’s healthy? ESPN reported last week that the Cowboys were expecting Romo to make a return for Week 8 later on this month.

Before then, the Cowboys will face the Packers at Lambeau Field next week, and have a bye. If the Cowboys go into Week 8 with a 5-1 record, it’s hard to imagine the Cowboys would replace Prescott, or at the very least, rush Romo back.
