The Kansas City Chiefs’ backfield took a blow on Tuesday afternoon, when running back Jamaal Charles was placed on injured reserve, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Charles played in just three games during the 2016 season, totaling 12 carries for only 40 yards and one touchdown.

The 29-year-old has been dealing with swelling in his knee, and was slated to see Dr. James Andrews about the injury this week. After his visit, it was determined that Charles would need a second knee surgery, though Rapoport reported that the level of “severity is unclear.

Thursday, Rapoport reported that Charles had a knee scope on Monday.

This is the second consecutive season in which Charles has been placed on injured reserve. Last season, Charles tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 against the Chicago Bears. In 2011, Charles suffered a torn ACL in his left knee.

But the emergence of Spencer Ware — who has rushed for 511 yards this season — combined with Charles’ age and the repeated damage to his knees, could mean the end of his time in Kansas City.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Ware left Sunday’s win with a concussion. The team has worked out Trent Richardson and Vick Ballard at running back, according to ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

At the very least, they are now down to Charcandrick West, and recently signed Bishop Sankey for next week’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
