Bryce Petty is starting for the Jets. Ryan Fitzpatrick is backing him up.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was benched earlier in the year for Geno Smith.

The New York Jets have made a change at quarterback again and plan to start second-year QB Bryce Petty against the Los Angeles Rams, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will be active, but he’s serving as the backup for Petty this week. It’s an opportunity for the 2015 fourth-round pick to prove that the job should be his.

Fitzpatrick entered the season as the starter for the Jets, after a lengthy holdout in the offseason, but he struggled in his return to the role and had a six-interception game in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was benched in Week 7 — allowing Geno Smith to take over for the Jets — but Smith suffered an ACL tear that turned the team back over to Fitzpatrick.

After the veteran was benched, there was a rift between Fitzpatrick and Jets head coach Todd Bowles that may have impacted the team’s decision to quickly turn to a third option after Fitzpatrick threw two interceptions in Week 9.

“The biggest thing in this game in order to last is to have belief in yourself,” Fitzpatrick said after he was forced back into the starting lineup in Week 8. “Because when the owner stops believing in you, and the GM stops believing in you, and the coaches stop believing in you, sometimes all you have is yourself.”

When Fitzpatrick said he was “pissed off” about the team’s decision to bench him, Bowles snapped back with a barb about the veteran quarterback’s NFL-leading interception total.

A year after finishing 10-6, the Jets are just 3-6 and there’s a sense of desperation for the team to figure out things. But it seems clear that Fitzpatrick’s days in New York are numbered after he battled for a one-year, $12 million deal in the offseason.

With Smith on injured reserve, the other quarterback options for the Jets are a pair of young passers — Petty and Christian Hackenberg. It would behoove New York to see if either can provide a spark and to properly evaluate the team’s logjam at quarterback before the offseason.

The Jets will get that chance to see Petty fully in action Sunday against the Rams, an aggressive and physical defense that is No. 8 in total yards allowed and No. 9 against the pass.
