Cam Newton is just like us: He can’t get enough of touchdown celebrations

Newton enjoyed Odell Beckham Jr.’s “Thriller” celebration as much as we did.

Cam Newton is known for his flamboyant style and his touchdown celebrations, and he recognizes that it’s part of the reason people keep watching the NFL.

As a matter of fact, celebrations keep Newton watching the NFL.

“In some way, shape, form and fashion, we are entertainers,” Newton said Tuesday. “When you come out in cleats and do a certain dance, people are watching. … The league has to understand that it’s entertaining for people to see that.

“I found myself trying to see what Odell Beckham was going to do for his end zone celebration. People can’t get enough of it. I can’t.”

Newton is correct. Beckham’s “Thriller” touchdown dance was the epitome of fun.

Considering the challenges associated with playing in the NFL, Newton said that players have earned the right to celebrate their accomplishments on the field.

“Football is hard. It’s a tough sport, a physical sport. Scoring a touchdown, getting a sack, getting a win – and staying here until 10 at night and being here at 6 in the morning, all the energy you put in spending time away from your family – you are owed something. Some people let it out with a celebration … and then it’s a reciprocated feeling when a fan goes and sees their favorite player celebrating.”

Newton is no stranger to celebrations.

For the Panthers, as they look to battle back from a 1-5 start and overcome a tough loss at home to the Kansas City Chiefs last week, making the plays that warrant celebrations is imperative.

“For us, we have to focus in and hone in on clutch situations and knowing when it’s time to win,” Newton said. “Sometimes it may be the big play that makes SportsCenter. Sometimes it may be a hidden jewel — a great punt inside the 5-yard line.”

No matter what kind of play it is, Newton will be ready to celebrate it.
