Washington’s left tackle Trent Williams is suspended for four games due to violating the NFL’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. The suspension stems from a missed drug test, according to the Washington Post.
How Trent Williams’ suspension changes the NFL playoff picture for Washington
Kirk Cousins’ blindside will be unprotected for a month against a tough slate of opponents.

”We met with Trent today to discuss this unfortunate news,” Washington said in a statement. “Per the terms of the Policy, Trent will be permitted to participate in team meetings and workout at the [team] facilities throughout this time. Our focus will now turn to the Minnesota Vikings after our bye this upcoming weekend. Any questions related to this matter should be directed to the NFL or NFLPA.”
Ty Nsekhe is behind Williams on the depth chart. For now, he’ll take over the left tackle job.
This suspension will affect Washington’s offensive line because Williams is the catalyst of that unit. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has only been sacked 11 times this season. Now, his star blindside protector will be out of action against the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and Arizona Cardinals.
Williams’ suspension is not ideal for Washington’s playoff chances. At 4-3-1, they’re in a tight race with the divisions two other teams, the 4-3 Giants and 4-3 Eagles, with a legitimate shot at an NFC Wild Card. That’s a difficult stretch of the schedule to plod through without the starting left tackle.
Meanwhile, the Giants get to play both the Bears and Browns — two of the league’s worst teams — during that same period of time. It gives them a chance for an advantage over Washington.
Washington isn’t the only team with offensive line questions. They’re not even the only playoff hopeful in the NFC with problems on the offensive line. Both Minnesota and Seattle have suffered lately through terrible offensive line play, with the Vikings losing their last two and the Seahawks with a tie and a loss.
Following Washington’s matchup against the Cardinals, Williams will be able to return to the field on Dec. 5.
Williams was suspended four games in 2011 after testing positive for marijuana.
