The New England Patriots are happy with the offseason addition of tight end Martellus Bennett. So happy, in fact, that they want to keep him around for the long term. Signing Bennett to a new contract — his current one ends after this season — is an offseason priority for the team, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

The Patriots want to keep their tight end over the long haul.

The Chicago Bears traded Bennett to the Patriots back in March for a fourth-round draft pick. He was never especially happy in Chicago, something he’s made clear in subsequent interviews. Bennett rarely struggles to speak his mind, and he also has offered a few choice words for his former quarterback, Jay Cutler.
He’s not having problems with his new quarterback. With the Patriots this season, he’s caught 38 passes for 504 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also battled through injury, but he has still managed to play in all nine of the team’s games.
He has the second-most receptions of any player on the team. And his presence has helped balance out a Patriots offense scoring nearly 27 points per game.
Bennett is scheduled to make just over $5 million this season, so he’ll be in line for a nice payday, a well-deserved one, in his next deal. Not bad for a humble kid from The Imagination Agency.
