If you’re looking for a microcosm of Russell Westbrook’s historic start to the season, look no further than Oklahoma City’s Saturday night win over the Detroit Pistons.
NBA scores 2016: Even Russell Westbrook is imitating Russell Westbrook
Westbrook pulling away from mere human beings with his incredible play through 18 games.

Westbrook notched his seventh triple-double on the season. He now has more triple doubles than James Harden (4) and LeBron James (2) combined. Westbrook has also tied James on the all-time triple-double leaderboard (44 apiece) and needed just one more rebound against the Pistons to boost his season average of 9.94 rebounds into double figures.
Thunder head coach Billy Donovan had the highest of praise for Westbrook, saying: “He’s a Hall of Fame player. I mean that’s really what he is. He’s a Hall of Fame player.”
And with a series of Vine-worthy on-court moments, Oklahoma City’s point guard continued his campaign for league Most Valuable Player.
There was the phenomenal Euro-step around shot-blocker extraordinaire, Andre Drummond (watch as he imitates himself euro-stepping Drummond as he gets back on defense):
There was this three-quarter-court heave to Andre Roberson for the emphatic jam and Westbrook’s 10th assist:
There was the circus finish in transition off of a Jerami Grant block...
And there was this transition finish, this time after blowing by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope:
In all, Westbrook finished with 17 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds in OKC’s 106-88 home win. Through 18 games, Westbrook has notched 561 points, 201 assists and 179 rebounds. No player in the past 35 years has come within a hashmark of what he’s doing. In fact, Magic Johnson is the only other player to post at least 400 points, 140 assists and 140 rebounds through 18 games.
Westbrook is on pace to join Johnson and Oscar Robertson (four times) as the only players in NBA history to average at least 10 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in a season.
If he ramps up his rebounding (9.9 boards per game), he could join Robertson and Elgin Baylor as the only players 6-foot-5 or shorter to average 30 points and 10 rebounds in a season. And he could join Robertson (five times) and Tiny Archibald as the only players in NBA history to average 30 points and 10 assists. (h/t Basketball-Reference)
But enough about Westbrook. Here’s what happened around the NBA if you were still in a Thanksgiving food coma on Saturday:
Kris Humphries is out here breaking backboards
Humphries isn’t out here breaking stat sheets or records. In his 12th NBA season, the 6-foot-9 forward is averaging a calm 3.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game with the Atlanta Hawks.
But in Saturday practice, Humphries showed this unknowing basketball backboard who’s boss during practice.
Andrew Wiggins absolutely destroyed JaVale McGee with this tomahawk
Just look at Klay Thompson’s face. If his face doesn’t match yours, something’s wrong.
Wizards fans went crazy for free chicken sandwiches
The 5-10 Wizards have a lot of issues. But these fans are making the most of their hard-earned money cheering on Spurs guard Dejounte Murray for missing two free consecutive free throws. Free Chick-fil-a for everyone.
Kevin Durant shook Ricky Rubio before drilling a 29-footer
If you thought Kevin Durant joining the Warriors wasn’t fair over the summer, what do you think now?
Jonathon Simmons caught a chase-down block on one end and a put-back dunk on the other
Jonathon Simmons came out of nowhere for this vicious chase-down block of Marcus Thornton’s lay-up. He then popped up on the other end for a one-hand put-back of LaMarcus Aldridge’s three-pointer.
Saturday’s top five performances
Russell Westbrook: 17 points (8-for-22 shooting), 15 assists, 13 rebounds
The man is on a tear of historic proportions and nothing is going to stand in his way. Especially not Andre Drummond.
Stephen Curry: 30 points (13-for-19 shooting, 4-for-8 from three), 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals
The Warriors have rattled off 11 straight wins and Steph Curry was out there doing Steph Curry things against Minnesota.
Jeremy Lamb: 18 points (8-for-15 shooting), 17 rebounds
Lamb came out of nowhere and snatched 17 boards as Knicks and Hornets split a pair of back-to-back games.
Marc Gasol: 28 points (11-for-16 shooting), 6 assists, 3 rebounds
Gasol finished shooting 2-for-4 from three. Still odd seeing his shoot this many triples each night, but Grizzlies are loving that he’s making them.
LaMarcus Aldridge: 24 points (9-for-17 shooting), 7 rebounds, 1 steal
Aldridge’s hot mid-range shooting led San Antonio to a tie with the Clippers both at 14-3 on the season. The Spurs have won nine straight games, and improved to 10-0 on the road this season.
