San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets after suffering a head injury in the third quarter.

The injury took place on Smith’s only target of the game. The veteran wideout broke free on a deep route down the left sideline, but hit the turf hard after jumping up for the ball.

Smith laid motionless on the turf for a few minutes before moving all his extremities. He draped a towel over his head and sat on the team’s injury cart for a ride to the locker room to be examined by team doctors. The receiver appeared to be in tears as he rode off the field.

He later showed his appreciation to the team’s fans after a 23-17 overtime loss.
