Jerry Jones on a situation where Tony Romo takes over for Dak Prescott: ‘You’ll know it when you see it’

Jones sounds determined to get Romo out on the field at some point.

There’s still a chance that Tony Romo will take the field at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys this season. Owner Jerry Jones said on Dallas’ 105.3 The Fan that “you’ll know it when you see” regarding the situation that would cause the team to sub in Romo for standout rookie Dak Prescott.

The Fan’s Shan and RJ asked Jones if Romo would take over should Prescott become injured or not play well.

“You don’t want either of those (situations) to occur, and so they’re unmentionables, but it will be pretty obvious that when you see it with Romo sitting there playing at the level he’s playing right now, practicing at the level he’s practicing, he’s got the experience,” Jones said. “We’re going into these last three games, as well as the playoffs, we’re going into it at good shape, good depth, at quarterback.”

Prescott has had an outstanding rookie campaign, leading Dallas to an 11-2 record. He’s thrown for 3,139 yards with 20 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

Two of those interceptions came in Prescott’s first bad game of the season, a 10-7 Week 14 loss to the New York Giants.

After the loss, Jones didn’t seem concerned about Prescott’s ability to perform down the stretch. Jones told NFL Network’s Judy Battista that he feels good about Prescott.

”He’s got 13 NFL ballgames at a high level under his belt and what’s he got, four interceptions now? Four? So four interceptions,” Jones said. “I feel good about our quarterback and I like where we are at the quarterback position.”

But Jones has also shared a vision for a Hollywood-style ending to this season for Romo, in which Romo leads the team to its first Super Bowl win since 1995.

“While that’s a mixed bag when I think about it — that means you don’t have Dak out there — but it means, what a story, one for the ages, if he’d step in there and this year help us win a Super Bowl on the field with his skill,” Jones said. “That can happen here. We’re not talking about a bus driver out there. We’re talking about a guy who can go out there and move our team.”

Jones said Tuesday that he doesn’t know exactly what situation would prompt the Cowboys to make a change.

“I don’t have a definition for it, but you’ll know it when you see it,” Jones said.

It’s difficult to find much fault with the way Prescott has played this season. Still, it seems that Jones may find a way to work Romo into the starting lineup before it’s all said and done.

The Cowboys were the first team to lock up a playoff bid in the 2016 season. Dallas faces off against the 8-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, then will take on the Detroit Lions in Week 16. The Cowboys finish off the regular season in Philadelphia, facing the 5-8 Eagles.
