Bill O’Brien didn’t give Brock Osweiler much of a leash Sunday, and it proved to be the right decision as Tom Savage led the Houston Texans back from a late deficit to outscore the Jacksonville Jaguars 10-0 in the fourth quarter and earn a crucial 21-20 victory.
Jaguars vs. Texans 2016 final score: Tom Savage leads Houston to comeback victory
Tom Savage looked like a capable quarterback and that would be a welcomed sight in Houston.

Osweiler started the game with two interceptions and just 48 passing yards, spotting the Jaguars an early lead. That’s when O’Brien quickly turned to Savage to lead the way, and didn’t pull back on the reins at all — allowing Savage to throw 36 passes in the remainder of the game.
Savage finished 23-of-36 passing for 260 yards, but didn’t throw any touchdown passes or interceptions. Still, he led the Texans down the field on a eight-play, 52-yard touchdown drive that gave Houston its first lead of the game with under three minutes to play.
His big day came despite the fact that Jaguars rookie cornerback Jalen Ramsey was a star for most of the day and held DeAndre Hopkins in check.
With Savage under center, the Texans were able to move the ball on a Jacksonville defense that entered Sunday No. 5 in total yards allowed, and shut down Osweiler early.
While Osweiler has the team’s biggest salary cap hit until 2019 and was the biggest acquisition of the offseason, O’Brien’s best quarterback seems to clearly be Savage, a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
With the No. 1 pick in that draft, the Texans selected Jadeveon Clowney and he looked worth the price tag Sunday. He was dominant for the Houston offensive line and a big reason why the team was unable to score an offensive touchdown in the second half (the only touchdown was a kickoff return by Marqise Lee).
Clowney finished the game with just one sack, but his constant disruption was too much for the Jacksonville offense and helped the Texans defense deal with the absences of both J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus.
After the game, the Jaguars decided that it was time to fire head coach Gus Bradley. The team went through yet another collapse, as they fell to 2-12 on the season.
The victory for Houston keeps the Texans atop the AFC South, thanks to a tiebreaker with the Tennessee Titans. But more importantly, the team may have found a quarterback capable of consistently leading the team to points, which could suddenly make Houston a dangerous team down the stretch and into the postseason.
