Antonio Brown now wants to be called ‘Ronald’

When asked why, the Steelers wideout responded, “It’s top secret.”

At his media availability Friday, Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown had an interesting response when asked about his cleats for the NFL’s charity cleat week, asking everyone to call him Ronald while saying that the reasoning was top secret.

In the longer sequence, shared by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Brown repeatedly insisted on being called Ronald, at first referring to himself/Ronald in the third person in a way that implied that he may not actually be “Ronald.” “I’m watching Ronald every day,” Brown said. “There’s effects against Ronald everywhere.”

When a media member asked him about “the Ronald thing,” he responded, “It’s my new name — Ronald ... It’s top secret. From now on, address me as Ronald.”

The conversation initially suggests that the “Ronald” nickname is about the cleats, but the connection remains unsteady. Although the “Ronald” name might suggest that he may be raising money for the Ronald McDonald House, his charity of choice will actually be Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Perhaps Brown may have forged a connection with a young boy named Ronald, but as of now we have no details for sure. The Post-Gazette suggested that it may potentially connect to the recent death of the creator of the McDonald’s Big Mac.

Perhaps Brown may be taking a page out of Lakers forward Nick Young’s book and giving himself an arbitrary nickname in the style of “Swaggy P.” Nevertheless, the rationale behind Brown’s new “Ronald” designation remains unknown.
