John Daly once threw $55,000 off a bridge because his wife was mad about his gambling

Where the money at?

Golfer John Daly is iconic. He’s talked about how he’s “all right” because he smokes two packs of cigarettes a day instead of three. He’s tried putting one-handed during an actual tournament. And he’s not afraid of looking glamorous in loud pants and drinking and smoking when golfing.

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, he reaches peak John Daly — by revealing that during a fight in the car with his then-wife Sherrie over his gambling habits, he threw $55,000 off a bridge.

$55,000?!? That’s more than what many people make in an ENTIRE YEAR.

Here’s what Daly told the Dan Le Batard Show on ESPN Radio last week:

I won like 55 grand in the casino, and I said, ... If you are going to yell and scream at me about this, I threw it over the bridge going over to Memphis from Arkansas. Threw all the money out the window and said, ‘You know what? If you want that money, you can go find it. But let me tell you something: You don’t have a job. You’re not working. I’m supporting you. I’m paying all the bills.’

It’s like that old story of a woman griping at a husband, saying, ‘You know, our lives just aren’t working out very good.’ There used to glamorous dinners, and all this stuff.

So my buddy took her to a McDonald’s drive-thru and got her two cheeseburgers and some french fries and a soda and says, ‘OK, this is how you can live from now on if that’s the way you want it.’

And, that’s kind of the point of the story is: We support them and pay for everything, but yet that time Sherrie wasn’t really appreciating what I was doing for her.

As long ago as this story must have taken place (the couple divorced in 2010), I still couldn’t help but wonder: Where did all of that money go? So I put on my investigative hat and set off to work.

I mapped out the casinos near Memphis, Daly’s reported starting spot, to try to pinpoint where this alleged bridge might be.

Regardless of whichever casino he went to, popular ways to get to Arkansas appears to be Route 64, Route 40, Route 79, or Route 14.

I took a break from writing this post to get a doughnut and decided it was too much work to figure this out. So I’m leaving this information out here in case someone knows what to do with it.
