It didn’t take long for the Los Angeles Rams to get turned down by the biggest names on their head coaching wish list. Jon Gruden, Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, and Stanford’s David Shaw all said “no” in one way or another after their names slipped into the rumor mill. This week, the reports are saying that the Rams don’t want to make a “big splash” with their coaching hire.
Ron Rivera and Sean Payton join the list of Rams’ rumored coaching candidates
Weird, for a team that supposedly doesn’t want to make a “big splash” with its coaching hire.

So what better way to not make a “big splash” with a new head coach than get linked to a couple of potential replacements currently employed as NFL head coaches?
First, there’s the Sean Payton rumor, resurrected this season after he got a hefty five-year extension from the Saints last year amid rumors of a trade to the Colts.
Why would the Saints trade Payton a year after giving him a contract extension? Frustrations within the organization are boiling as the team looks at another year without going to the playoffs. Members of the organization are tired of it, reports Ian Rapoport.
Another name to keep an eye on is Panthers head coach Ron Rivera. Rapoport pointed to Rivera as one possibility, but he’s another coach whom the Rams would have to trade for. He also mentioned Rivera bringing in the currently unemployed Norv Turner to run the offense and rescue Jared Goff from Jeff Fisher’s incompetent bunch of offensive coaches.
Then there are the coordinators. Kyle Shanahan and Josh McDaniels are still being mentioned, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Bills offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn are two more names on the list.
